Championship Sunday for the Summer 2025 season had a little bit of everything. There were a couple games that were never really close, a few that were close until they weren't, and others that were close all the way through. Again, you just never know in championship games.
Congratulations to The Hawgs, who won their first Division title in a while. Donte Williams and Fred Simms were dynamic in the win. And a big shout-out to 80-ish Jim McFarland, whose playing days are behind him but will forever be the heart and soul of The Hawgs. Jim is a TBL Legend.
We had a great game in the evening on TMC (Tom's Court). Seasoned Veterans and Mambas staged a barnburner. Mambas held a 23-16 lead at the half, but the Vets slowly climbed back into it before finally tying things up just before the buzzer. The overtime period was dominated by free throws, with the Vets coming out on top, 46-44.
Heat Check and Los Suns battled right down to the wire, with Los Suns grabbing a thrilling 63-62 victory. And, in the final game of the night, Anybody Can (Do It) hit multiple big shots down the stretch to hold off Storm, 77-73. Every time it looked as though Storm was poised to take the lead, Anybody would hit a clutch three or a tough driving layup to hang on to the lead.
I'd like to take the opportunity to announce that next season, Fall 2025, will be the 100th season of the Tucson Basketball League. I have mentioned in the past that we started in Summer 1988, which is 37 years ago. And, of course, 37 time 3 is 11, but in the early days of the Tucson Basketball League, we only had two seasons per year and then we were off for more than a year during the Pandemic. So, we just completed the 99th season of the TBL and Season Number 100 begins on Sunday. Let's make it great.
