After a tumultuous first three weeks of the season, the League has settled down into a nice pattern. We had one forfeit on Sunday and it involved a team for which several members en route to the venue were in a car that was involved in a minor collision during the rain storm. Otherwise, everything went great.
We had a really cool game on Sunday. Well, actually, we had several, but one in particular featured AZ Tropics and B-Town. (And no, as someone asked, B-Town does not follow the same pattern as B-word. It means Bisbee.) The Tropics had all eight players score, while B-Town had four players in double figures. Daniel Jimenez had 35 (including nine three-pointers) for B-Town and they needed every one of those points to eke out a 70-69 victory.
In other games:
--Arbol got 31 points from Ivon Virgil, Jr. in a tight 66-61 win over APEX.
--The guys from Shoot Your Shot went nuts in their game with Frosty Hesson. These two teams have played each other a few times over the years and they have almost all been good, tight games. Not this Sunday. Shoot Your Shot threw in 14 three-pointers in an 80-51 blowout win. Dominick Balsino, better known for his inside game and rebounding (more on that later) hit five threes and scored 33 points in the win. Dillon Molinar had seven threes and 25 points for Shoot. But, that's not all. To go along with his 33 points, Dominick also had 20 rebounds! But, to be fair, I was reffing that game and I watched as he had six of them on one play where he kept missing layups and kept getting putbacks. If you squint just right, you can see the resemblance to Angel Reese.
--Jeremy Sanchez and Eric Stewart had 14 points apiece and Dylan Looney added 13 as the Z Fighters pulled out a tight 56-54 win over Hickory. Leading the way for Hickory was Guillermo Bey with 23 points, including going 8-9 from the free-throw line. A couple weeks ago, I was working in the office and my wife called me into the living room. She was watching the news and there on the screen was Guillermo at a community gathering. And he was wearing a Tucson Basketball League championship shirt. It was cool.
