We're Actually Ahead of Schedule?!

October 9th, 2025

100TH SEASON MEMORY - This being our 100th season, I've pretty much seen it all. And yes, for 100 seasons stretching over 37 years, I have never missed a Sunday. I have memories. There was this one time in the early 1990s, I had rolled my ankle pretty badly while working (and scrimmaging) at the Brian Peabody Basketball Camp. My ankle was huge, multi-colored, and every step brought a new adventure in pain. I figured I'd sit out that week, maybe just keep score instead of reffing. Just my luck, as it turns out, every other ref had tickets to go see MC Hammer at the Pima County Fairgrounds. I had to ref the last four games by myself, leaning on the scorer's table and not moving. The players were quite gracious that night, even helping me with some calls.

--The standings are up for the current season. The Divisions are named for Taylor Swift songs. Don't ask me why. I know exactly one Taylor Swift song, that "Shake It Off" one that gets played at sporting events all the time. For the Division names, we needed something of which there are at least 12 (Tribes of Israel, Counties in Arizona, etc.).

Since Taylor Swift probably has 12 songs in the Top 100 at any given time, this was easy for Alexander.

Also, there are 15 counties in Arizona. If you can name all 15 without looking it up, you're a baaad man (or woman). Be glad you're not in Texas. They have 254 counties. Their counties are all small because when they were originally established, it was decided that for every resident of the County, it was no more than one day's horseback ride to get to the County seat. Odd, but true.

--Our highlight game of the week features The Outlawz against The Saints. Will Evil triumph?

THIS IS IMPORTANT - Through a very unique set of circumstances (including my idiotic decision to start the Fall 2025 season on August 31st instead of waiting for September 7th), we're facing a scheduling dilemma of sorts. Several teams will be playing their fifth regular-season this Sunday (October 12th). In past seasons, teams would hit their fifth game around Halloween, so we are way ahead of schedule. Other factors that must be considered are that court availability diminishes when club volleyball starts in November. Then, some teams don't want to play on Thanksgiving Weekend Sunday. I've considered just having the League take a Sunday off in November to let things catch up, but then I'd hear a widespread chorus of "What?! Another bye?"

Finally, counting backward, we always take two weeks off during the holidays. This season, that would be December 21st and 28th, with the next season starting on January 4th, 2026. That would mean that the championship games would be played on December 14th. Or, we could have the championship games on December 21st, then take off December 28th and January 4th, with the next season starting on December 11th. And, believe it or not, the start of the Winter season is partly determined by the date of Easter Sunday (which will be a relatively early April 5th next year).

A lot of you think I'm old. I'm really only 42. It's just that all of this mental gymnastics stuff is accelerating the aging process. I'll let you know next week what I've decided. Thanks.
