Big Opening Day Coming Sunday

April 28th, 2026

We had a few games this past Sunday, but they were mostly for teams that had, unfortunately, lost in the first round of the Winter 2026 playoffs way back on March 22nd. The main opening week for the Summer 2026 season will be this coming Sunday, May 3rd.For probably the 75th season in a row, we had at least one team commit the egregious transgression. I seriously don't understand how anyone who is ostensibly an adult can pull it off without being wracked with guilt and/or shame. They sign up their team on the sheet of the previous season, Then , I have one of my scorekeepers text them as the new season is approaching to make sure that they still want to play. THEN, after posting the schedule for the opening week, I have the girls text them again to let them know what time their first game is.

Then, inevitably, I get a text ON SUNDAY MORNING(!), "Hey Tom, we're not going to make it. I had a couple guys who bailed on me. We just won't play this season. We'll be back next season." It just ruins the entire day.

Somebody asked me the other day why the League costs what it does. The main expense is the court rental fees, but as I have explained before, the running of the venue is labor intensive and, by law, the minimum wage in Arizona goes up every January. As labor costs go up, so does the court rental fee and, accordingly, the cost of the League. However, we would probably be able to charge a little bit less if we had no forfeits. Each forfeit costs us over $200 because we have to pay the refs and the scorekeeper, pay for the court AND give the team that showed up a makeup game. (To be fair, we actually have a very low rate of forfeits compared to other leagues, but I want zero.)

So, as we jump into the Summer season, remember that old line: Ninety percent of life is just showing up. Let's have a great season.
