Last season Summer 2026), we played more than 350 games and in exactly two if them, a team scored triple digits. It's just very rare in the Tucson Basketball League. The running clock has a lot to do with it, but there are other factors, as well. Having said that, how, then, do we explain that we had three three teams hit the century mark on Sunday, including two teams pulling the feat at 7:00 o different courts and two team doing it on one court in back-to-back games.

And these weren't the horribly scheduled 50-point blowout games that sometimes happen. One of the losing teams scored 68 points, another had 78, and the third scored 84. This is just weird. The three teams that scored the triple digits were The Lobos (102), Air Jesus (100), and Phantomz (101).

Back in the Old Days, when I used to ref a lot of games, I made a point of not allowing teams to score 100 or more if they were winning by 40 or 50 points. It's an art form unto itself. A long time ago, we used to play quarters. One team was ahead 93-48 after three quarters. They were whooping it up over by the bench, talking about how they were going to break the League single-game scoring record (it's 127). I told them that they wouldn't even get to 100. They all said, "You wanna' bet?!" That shows you the combined IQ of that team, willing to be against the guy who is reffing the game.

All I did was call fouls on the team that was losing so that the winners wouldn't have anything to complain about. I took my time reporting the fouls to the scorer's table, so by the time we got to one-and-one, there were only about three minutes left in the game with the clock running the whole time. And, while these guys were good at shooting threes and dunking, they had all graduated from the Shaquille O'Neal School of Free-Throw Shooting. They couldn't hit their butts with both hands. Final score 97-60. 

I have tried to pass this along to younger refs, but they don't seem to get it. They'll say stuff like, "It was just raining threes. I couldn't do anything to stop it."
