If Only My Arms Were Longer...

February 18th, 2025

...I would pat myself on the back. After 37 years of doing this, I still get a kick when I mostly get it right. Look at these scores from Sunday:

--The Crew 58, Team Lace-Up 57

--Outlawz 54, 520 Personal Training 52

--Storm 63, Prestige 60

--Black Mambas 58, Bandits 57

--Paper Route Hoopers 36, Blue Coconuts 34

--Basketball Junkies 75, Tuc Select 72

--The Show 79, Royal 3s 76

--Flashback 54, Bob Ross In The Paint 52

--The Coaches 60, Team UGLY 56

--The Saints 64, Z Fighters 61

--Enter Team Name Here 54, YSL 50

--Hickory 43, Rayzor Kings 42

--Just a Game 61, Killer Whales 60

--Skoden 78, Sikhos 77

That's just crazy! Fourteen games decided by four points or less. And, of the 36 games on Sunday, only 12 were decided by double figures. As 'Cube would say, it was a good day.

Mark and I got to ref the Skoden-Sikhos game and it was magnificent. For the first 10 minutes of the second half, neither team had more than a three-point lead. Then, Sikhos pulled out to a six-point edge and I figured that was that. But ageless Jeff Juan led a furious Skoden rally in the final minute of regulation to tie the game and send it into overtime. It was a fast-paced, high-powered, clean game of basketball in which there were only 10 fouls between both teams. Norman Wolfchief (how's that for a name?) led the winners with 20 points.

We had another cool game. For years, Rez Legend Roland Ramon played with The Redmen. A couple years ago, he took some time off. He decided to make a comeback this season, but The Redmen had a full roster, so he started a new team, the Tucson Redmen. The two teams played each other on Sunday and, big surprise, it was a high-scoring game. Roland's new team pulled out a 78-73 win.

The Basketball Junkies, who have won several top-league titles in recent years, got a scare from a new team, Tuc Select. Sai Dean's squad, consisting of former players from Cholla and Tucson High, held their own with the Junkies before finally falling, 75-72.

Finally, here's something that's semi-cool. The Tucson Basketball League is coming up on its 100th season! Now, I know that it's been 37 years and 37 times 3 is 111, but we missed more than a year during the Pandemic and, in the early days of the League, we only had two seasons per year instead of three. I'll keep you posted.
