First of all, the headline is actually the title of a book and a movie from the 1960s about Michelangelo's struggle to paint the Sistine Chapel. But on Sunday, it represented the full spectrum of emotions on Court 2...also known as Tom's Court...also known as TMC. During the morning session, we had a game that went multiple overtimes and ended with a bang. I was reffing it with Mark and it was a delight.
Somebody asked me the other day why I still ref. The answer is that I do it to help keep costs down. If I ref three games in the morning and three at night, that's around $200 saved. (I don't pay myself.) Every little bit helps.
Anyway, Good Guys and Killer Whales were putting on a show. It was 28-27 at the half and 62 all at the end of regulation. Each team scored two points in the first overtime and so we played on. They kept matching each other's scoring and I kept looking at the clock because the venue staff needed to set up the volleyball nets. Out of necessity, we shortened the final overtime to one minute. One of the Good Guys guys got fouled with five seconds left and sank both free throws. The Whales called time out and got it at halfcourt. Leonard Moody's three-pointer swished through as the buzzer sounded. Moody, a former star at Cienega High School, led the Whales with 24 points. Edgar Poe (yes, that's his real name and no, I've never asked him if his middle name is--proper spelling--Allan) added 16 points and six boards for the Whales. Manny Avalos had 17 points and German Gastelum added 15 for the Good Guys.
So, we get to the night session on that court and we had the absolute strangest game. With only four minutes left in the first half, United Storm led The Crew, 22-20. It was a good, close game with both teams shooting well from long range. It felt like one of those games that would go down to the wire.
United Storm won by 40. I reffed it and (mostly) watched it but I have no reason why it happened.
In another thriller Bryan Hudson poured in 26 points to lead Most Hated to a 55-54 upset victory over Splash Pad. Dom Banks led Splash Pad with 20 points.
Julyan Loss had a near double-double (30 points and nine rebounds) to lead AZ Knights past Z Fighters, 61-58. Jeremy Sanchez actually did have a double-double (22 and 10) for Z Fighters.
Isaiah Ortega and Anthony Ortiz combined for 64 points in the Phantomz's 103-87 win over Mansfield Ballers. Play some D!
